Match the Head to the Arc, Not the Arc to the Head
Every putting stroke travels on some degree of arc. Some are close to straight; most curve inward on the backswing and outward through impact to a greater or lesser extent. That arc is largely a product of your posture, eye position and shoulder geometry, and it is remarkably stable once you have played for a few years.
A putter head has a matching property, usually described as toe hang: balance the shaft on a finger and see how far the toe drops. A face-balanced head resists rotation and suits a stroke with little arc. A strong toe hang head wants to rotate and suits a stroke with a pronounced one.
Put a face-balanced mallet in the hands of a golfer with a strong arc and the head fights the rotation the whole way through. The golfer compensates, usually by holding the face open and then flicking it closed late, and the result is a stroke that works on Tuesday and not on Saturday. The session measures the arc first and works backwards from there.

Four More Specifications That Get Measured
Lie angle
The quietest error in putting. A putter sitting toe-up or heel-up at address changes where the face points relative to your intended line, and because the correction happens subconsciously most golfers never trace a miss back to it. We read it to a tenth of a degree and bend to a one-degree band.
Length and eye position
Length sets where your eyes sit relative to the ball, which governs how you see the line. Eyes well inside the ball tends to produce a pull; directly over or slightly outside tends to produce a push. Length is adjusted to put the eyes where your aim is most repeatable, not where a chart says.
Head mass and green speed
Heavier heads suit slower surfaces and a shorter, more passive stroke. Lighter heads suit quick greens and players who prefer to feel the stroke accelerate. Since the Triangle runs Bermuda greens with real seasonal speed variation, this one matters here more than it would in a cooler climate.
Loft and launch quality
A putter needs enough loft to lift the ball out of its resting depression and start it rolling early. Too little and it bounces; too much and it hops. Forward press and shaft lean at impact change the effective figure, so we measure delivered loft rather than static loft.
